Why do I need to have my credentials evaluated?
A WES credential evaluation provides U.S. equivalent(s) for your credential(s) in order to pursue further education or seek employment in the U.S. It allows university admissions officers, employers and licensing boards to understand your overseas credentials in U.S. terms.
What types of credentials does WES evaluate?
WES evaluates university degrees (undergraduate and graduate) and high school diplomas. WES can also provide U.S. equivalents for in-progress or incomplete post-secondary study based on credits earned.
When should I have my credentials evaluated?
You should apply for an evaluation as early as possible because some institutions can take several weeks to provide documentation.
What does a WES credential evaluation report provide?
A WES credential evaluation verifies and compares your degrees and/or diplomas with their U.S. educational equivalents. The evaluation is advisory and is designed to help universities, licensing boards and employers in the U.S. understand and recognize credentials earned outside the U.S.
Does the U.S. government evaluate credentials?
There is no U.S. government agency that evaluates credentials. Credentials are evaluated by universities and by private organizations such as WES.
How widely are WES evaluations recognized?
WES evaluations are accepted by more than 2,500 universities, licensing boards, government agencies and employers. WES is the largest evaluation service in the U.S. WES prepares more than 75,000 evaluations per year.
The Evaluation Process
How does WES review credentials?
All credentials are carefully reviewed and analyzed upon arrival at WES. If WES determines that a credential requires additional information or verification, WES will contact the institution that issued it for verification or to obtain additional information.

Applying to WES
How do I start?
Should I apply first or submit my documents first?
You must apply first. All documents that arrive at WES should include a reference number that is provided upon order completion. Without a completed application on file, WES cannot guarantee the proper processing of documents or provide delivery status updates.
Does WES evaluate documents from my country and/or the institution that I attended?
WES has been evaluating academic credentials since 1974 and has accumulated information on thousands of institutions and credentials worldwide. WES continuously conducts research to keep our data up-to-date. WES evaluates legitimate credentials issued by a recognized institution. Note: World Education Services does reserve the right not to accept an application for evaluation.

I have a university degree from my country. Should I also submit my secondary school diploma?
Check your countryís document requirements for specific instructions. In some cases, recipient institutions may also require that an evaluation of your secondary study be included in your report. This will be indicated at the order process.
Does WES recognize a three-year bachelor's degree from India?
WES recognizes select three-year bachelor's degrees from India as equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. Use WESí free degree equivalency tool to learn the equivalency of your education as it compares to the U.S.
A free degree equivalency is not available for my credential. What does this mean?
The WES database recognizes more than 40,000 institutions and is continuously updated. If your institution or degree is legitimate, you can order a WES credential evaluation, at which time your credential will be researched and additional instructions will be provided shortly. †In some cases, WES reserves the right not to evaluate credentials. Please see your countryís document requirements for additional information.
WES offers two types of evaluations:
- A Document-by-Document evaluation contains a description of your credentials, including name, year awarded, name of institution attended, and major field of study. It also provides the U.S. equivalent for each credential. View sample
- A Course-by-Course evaluation contains all of the information in a Document-by-Document evaluation and in addition, it lists all post-secondary subjects with their corresponding value expressed in terms of U.S. semester credit and grade equivalents. View sample
- After you select which type of evaluation report you need, you can choose either the basic evaluation (report delivery only) or the International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) (evaluation report + verified transcript delivery + electronic storage of your report and transcripts).
Which evaluation should I choose?
The Course-by-Course evaluation is recommended for post-secondary education or licensing because it contains a detailed course analysis. A Document-by-Document evaluation is usually sufficient for employment, immigration of for individuals with high school only. If you are unsure, check with your designated recipients for specific requirements.
WES ICAP (Transcript and Evaluation)
What is WES ICAP?
International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) provides lifetime storage and delivery of your verified academic transcripts to academic institutions together with your credential evaluation reports. The WES Basic package delivers your evaluation report only. For a detailed illustration, see How It Works.
Why doesnít WES release my transcripts to me?
Official and verified academic records are usually transmitted from institution to institution. WES releases verified transcripts only to recognized academic institutions, but not to individual applicants.
I donít need an evaluation for education purposes, should I still order WES ICAP?
WES ICAP is recommended so that your evaluation and transcripts are permanently available. Should you pursue education in the future, you wonít need to request your transcripts from overseas again. WES electronically stores verified copies of your transcripts and your evaluation report for submission to any college or university in the U.S. at any time.
If I donít order WES ICAP when I first apply, can I do it later?
Upgrading to ICAP is available for all files received after January 1, 2007. To upgrade, visit your My Account page.
What is the cost of a WES evaluation?
For all costs, please refer to the fee schedule.
How many credentials does the evaluation fee cover?
The fee covers the evaluation of all credentials submitted to WES at the time of your initial order. Additional fees apply to add credentials to a completed report.
How Long Does it Take?
How long does it take to obtain a WES evaluation?
The standard processing time is seven (7) business days after receipt, review and approval of all documents and payment in full. If additional research, correspondence or verification is required, the evaluation will take longer.
To ensure the timely completion of your evaluation report, it is strongly recommend that you arrange for your documents to arrive at WES as soon as possible. Some institutions can take several weeks to provide documentation.

Document Requirements and Verification
What are WES’ documentation requirements?
WES document requirements are based on your country of education.† The requirements are absolute and cannot be adjusted or negotiated.† Carefully review what and how to submit your documents. Failure to adhere to these requirements could delay your credential evaluation/assessment.
WES’ documentation submission and verification practices adhere to the standards used in North America for the authentication of academic documents. They assure U.S. institutions that your credentials are accurate and valid.†
Can I send documents outside the scope of the required documents?
WES only evaluates credentials earned through formal academic training. Short-term professional development courses or non-academic training documents are not evaluated and should not be submitted.
WES notified me that the documents I submitted were sent for verification. How does this affect my evaluation?
At times, documents received for evaluation are sent back to the issuing institution for verification. This step further validates the authenticity of your credentials for your recipients.
My documents were sent for verification, how can I expedite the verification process?
Allow the institution reasonable time to receive the letter and respond. However, if your file remains on hold and your deadlines are approaching, you may contact the institution. If an institution requests payment for verification, WES will send you the notification so that you can pay it directly to the institution.
Document verification requests may be re-delivered to your institution by international courier service.† For more information, contact WES. For costs, please see WES Fee Schedule.
What is the status of my evaluation?
WES provides an easy-to-use online tracking system for all applicants. Visit your account. The most up-to-date information and best way to monitor the status of your evaluation is by checking your account.
Were my documents delivered to WES?
After you have received tracking confirmation from a courier service that the documents have arrived at WES please allow 24-48 hours for WES to review your documents and update your file.† For up-to-date status, visit your account.
What if my documents are not in English?
Documents not in English require clear and legible photocopies of precise word-for-word English translations with your foreign-language documents.
Please do not send original translation documents as they cannot be returned.
WES does not provide translation services. Translations prepared by the school or university that you attended or by authorized translators are acceptable. For translation services in the U.S. you may contact University Language Services† Inc. at 1-800-419-4601. Outside the U.S., call 1- 212-766-4111.
