The WES Mariam Assefa Fund

The WES Mariam Assefa Fund believes in the talent and contributions of immigrants and refugees. The high-impact USD$30 million philanthropic fund will support efforts to permanently dismantle the barriers that impede economic advancement among immigrants and refugees in the United States and Canada.

The WES Mariam Assefa Fund’s initial areas of inquiry and interest include:

  • Solutions that equip immigrants and refugees with the skills to succeed in the workplace of today and tomorrow
  • Initiatives that encourage employers to tap into immigrant and refugee talent
  • Innovations that can accelerate scale and deepen the impact of immigrant integration and workforce development interventions
  • Initiatives that build leadership capacity within immigrant and refugee communities
  • Approaches to grow the ecosystem of supportive funders, policymakers, educators, employers and service providers

The Fund's Work

Our Near-term Focus

Initially, the WES Mariam Assefa Fund will focus on establishing its scope of work and intended impact and on learning what works and what doesn’t to spur lasting change. We will first test and assess existing approaches to determine which have the greatest impact; we must enable leaders in the space to do more of the important work they already do; we must identify areas where experimentation is needed to develop transformational interventions.
