international education week essay contest

We are excited to announce the 2018 International Education Week (IEW) essay contest, which is now accepting submissions! IEW, which takes place November 12 – 16, 2018, is a U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education initiative that promotes international education, study abroad, and global student exchanges. WES’ annual essay contest is a way for us to celebrate IEW and recognize the valuable contributions of international students.

Essay Contest Guidelines

The essay contest is open to all international students in the U.S. This year’s essay contest prompt is the following:

Describe your best piece of advice for prospective international students.

You can view the contest guidelines, judging criteria, and submit your essay, on the essay submission page. The deadline for essay submissions is Monday, November 12. The top four submissions will be featured on the WES Advisor Blog during IEW week and the top two winners will receive $50 Amazon gift cards.

If you would like to submit an essay, you can begin by thinking about what you wish you knew before you came to study abroad in the U.S. Use these ideas then to develop your essay on the best piece of advice that you want to share with other international students. Your advice can be cultural, academic, or social, so long as you think it will help international students as they prepare to study abroad.

Keep in mind, your essay should:

  • Have a title
  • Be organized into paragraphs
  • Have a clear beginning (introduction), middle (body paragraphs), and end (conclusion)
  • Use grammatically correct English (check your spelling before you submit your essay, please!)

We’re looking for creative, original essays written in your unique voice. Good luck and we look forward to reading your submissions!
