Pursuing higher education abroad, especially in the U.S. and Canada, is a cherished dream for many Indian students. Yet many highly qualified students are unable to study abroad merely because they do not have the financial means to do so.
Recognizing this situation and acknowledging the importance of education for students who wish to pursue their higher education abroad, several top Indian businessmen and corporate houses have launched scholarships in collaboration with prestigious U.S. and Canadian universities. These scholarships are specifically for Indian students. In order to qualify for these scholarships and fellowships, you must have exceptional talents.
Here we take a look at some of the top scholarships that are specially reserved for meritorious Indian students who want to study abroad in the U.S. or Canada.

University of Calgary Graduate Awards
The University of Calgary offers various awards, scholarships, and bursaries to meritorious Canadian and international students in diverse fields of study. However, those students pursuing an MBA are ineligible for this particular fellowship.
Students are eligible to receive the UMGF during the first 24 months of their master’s program and the first 48 months of their doctorate program. The maximum duration of monetary support for an individual graduate student is 48 months.
While these scholarships offer lucrative funding for your higher education, securing one depends upon your academic record and provable merit. Remember, competition for these scholarships is rather intense.
Furthermore, obtaining a scholarship to study in the U.S. or Canada does not automatically entitle you to study at that particular college or university; you may have to provide evidence that you have the necessary financial means to augment the scholarship amount.
Finally, studying on a scholarship does not exempt you from standard pre-entrance exams that are required for admission to U.S. and Canadian universities. For example, you may need to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, both of which measure your English fluency.
Getting a scholarship in the U.S. and Canada does not automatically qualify you for a study visa to these countries. Visas are only issued to students who meet all criteria established by the immigration authorities of these countries. Keep in mind that visa regulations are subject to change without notice. In some instances, you may also have to prove your willingness to return to India upon completing your studies.
With the high demand in India for people in specialized fields holding academic qualifications from the U.S. and Canada, it is worth considering applying to the fellowships, scholarships, bursaries, and awards listed above that pertain to you and your interests. Accepting a fellowship from Tata or Reliance can help you obtain a good job at one of these large corporations. Plus, a degree from a U.S. or Canadian university can help pave the way to a bright career in India.
