Using your Evaluation
As an immigrant, one of your most valuable assets is your education. Whether you earned your degree or interrupted your studies, your education has value and can be recognized in the U.S. Having your credentials evaluated is the first step in gaining access to employment opportunities. You can read more about the U.S. experiences of foreign-educated immigrants here.
WES credential evaluation reports enable employers and licensing boards to understand the nature and U.S. equivalency of your academic accomplishments. They also provide verification of the authenticity of your credentials. While some companies and boards do their own evaluations, most hiring managers, human resources departments and professional boards rely on agencies like WES to validate and evaluate foreign credentials.
While many employers will be familiar with foreign credential evaluation and recognize WES reports, you will find that some are unfamiliar with the idea of credential evaluation. For this reason, it is important for you to explain your WES evaluation. The best ways to do this are:
- In the education section of your resume - and in your cover letters - be sure to mention that you have had your credentials authenticated and evaluated by WES and list all of the credentials that we have validated along with their U.S. academic equivalencies. This will enable employers to measure your academic background fairly alongside their U.S. educated candidates.
- Include a copy of your evaluation report along with your resume when you submit your initial application for employment, and bring the original report to any interviews. If offered employment, you will usually be required to have an official report sent directly by WES to the employer.
- In nearly all cases, human resources will not accept photocopies of your evaluation; your WES report will have to be sent directly from WES to any employer.
