NY Metropolitan Area Resources
There are many agencies that offer services to help immigrants improve their skills and offer information and support to immigrants to help them succeed. The following is a brief list, with links, of some of these helpful resources.
Public Libraries are a great community resource and often provide many services for immigrants in their communities. Many offer ESL and Citizenship classes, and often sponsor lectures and information sessions on topics such as finding employment or applying to college/university.
Online Directories of Immigrant Community-based Organizations: There are two great directories for residents of New York City:
Queens Library Citizenship and Immigrant Services: You can find their list of ESOL providers and a directory of immigrant serving agencies in Queens and the greater NY area.
NYC Directory of Services for Immigrants: Agencies are listed with their web pages, contact information, areas served and services provided.
New York City Government
311: New York City's online Web site and phone number for government information and non-emergency services. It also offers information and referrals for social services provided by nonprofit and community-based organizations in New York City. All calls to 311 are answered by a live operator, 24 hours a day, seven days a week and offer immediate access to translation services in over 170 languages. In any borough of New York City call 311 .
Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA): Provides information about various services of special interest to the immigrant community. Their MOIA guide to all city services is available in 6 languages.
NYC Department of Youth and Community Development also offers services for immigrants, including a list of ESL programs in the city.
United Way is a nationwide charitable network that supports community agencies of all kinds. Many local United Way agencies offer “information and referral” services to help you find the programs or services that you need. In New York City, use the “311” service noted above. In other areas, visit their web page to find your local United Way, then contact them to see if they offer an information and referral service. If not, your local library should be able to help you find local agencies that offer the services you are interested in.
