Education in Romania

During the 24-year reign of Nicolae Ceausescu, Romania’s system of education remained under strict state control. Curricula strongly emphasized Marxist-Leninist ideology, and universities, in particular, came under the direct influence of Ceausescu and his wife, Elena. As a result of the government’s isolationist policies, higher education was virtually cut off from the rest of the world. [Continued]

Grade Inflation in Germany

In an article entitled, “Wertlose Traumnoten,” literally “Worthless Dream Grades,” Der Spiegel magazine details the very generous grading policies currently practiced by German professors.

In 2001, for example, there was exactly one university psychology graduate out of 3,092 in all of Germany who scored in the lowest grading category of ausreichend (sufficient).

Since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, university recruiters have had to think long and hard about how we spend our time and money to continue recruiting a bright, diverse, international-student population to our campuses. International education departments at public institutions are currently suffering severe budget cuts that have resulted in slashed travel funds and, in the worst cases, layoffs.[Continued]
