Assessment and Promotion:
Students are continuously assessed through coursework and written and oral examinations. Examinations are given at the end of each academic year. Students who do not pass the examinations must retake the examination before the beginning of the next term. If they fail the examinations a second time, the academic year must be repeated. Students are allowed to repeat only one grade in lower secondary school. Examinations at the lower secondary level are the responsibility of provincial educational authorities.
At the conclusion of lower secondary school, students take a national examination that is prepared and administered by the Ministry of Education and Training. Those who pass the examination are awarded the  Bàng Tt Nghip PhThônh Thông Cơ S (Diploma of Completion of Lower Secondary Education). Completion of lower secondary education is the general entrance requirement for vocational, technical, and academic upper secondary education, in addition to required entrance examinations.
