HIGHER EDUCATION

Admission Requirements:
Completion of upper secondary education and receipt of the Bang Tot Nghiep Pho Tong Trung Hoc.  In addition, entrance examinations are required.  For Postgraduate education a first university degree is required and an entrance examination that includes foreign language, philosophy, and a specialty.

Three-years
 
Programme of Study:
The first stage of higher education includes both short and long term programmes.  Short programmes, of three to three and one-half years of study are offered in universities and junior colleges and lead to the Cao dang (associate bachelor’s degree). Long programmes, of four to six years duration, lead to the award of the cú nhân (bachelor), ky su (engineer), bác sy (medical doctor), or luât su (lawyer). Medical degrees are completed in six and one-half years. Degrees in technical studies, industry, and construction are completed in five years and lead to the title of engineer.

Postgraduate programmes leading to the Thac sy (master’s degree) are completed in two years beyond the first university degree. Some master’s programmes require prior occupational experience for admission. The Tiên sy (doctorate) is conferred after two to three years’ study following the master’s degree or a minimum of four years of study after the first university degree. Students who hold a master’s degree are exempt from a doctoral admission examination. The doctorate requires the defense of a thesis.

Students are continuously assessed through coursework and written and oral examinations
