LOWER SECONDARY EDUCATION
Secondary education begins at Grade 7 or Grade 9, depending on whether elementary education in the system extends through Grade 6 or Grade 8. In some systems, junior high school follows elementary school, and includes Grades 7 and 8 or 7-9, followed by high school, which can include Grades 9-12 or 10-12. At this level of education, students normally complete Grade 12 by age 17 or 18.

By the end of Grade 10, most students have decided whether they will follow a primarily academic program leading to further education at the college level, a vocational training program leading to employment or specialized post-secondary training, or a general program combining elements of both the academic and the vocational program.

Admission to secondary school is generally non-competitive. Students usually attend secondary schools in the districts where they reside though other factors such as availability of special programs may also be considered in the selection process. Some private schools use more selective admissions practices, taking into consideration such criteria as intellectual promise.
