ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
All elementary education begins with the first year of school (grade one) and generally ends at grade 6, 7, or 8 depending on state and local policy. Many states and local authorities divide elementary education into a lower elementary level and a middle school (upper elementary) level.

Age of Admission:
Age 5 to 7, with 6 being the most common age of entry

Length:
Four to seven, depending on type of institution

Programme of Study:
No nationally regulated curriculum exists. All laws and policies are set by the individual state governments and school districts.

Assessment and Promotion:
Students are continuously assessed through coursework (assignments and projects), as well as both written and oral examinations.

Depending on the policies of the particular State/Districts, awards may be distributed upon successful completion of the elementary level in order to proceed to the lower secondary level.
