Education
- Upper secondary education includes
grades X and XI. At the end of upper secondary school, students must
pass a state examination in six subjects.
Successful students are awarded the Certificate of Completed
Secondary Education.

- ASSESSMENT AND PROMOTION
- Students are regularly assessed throughout lower
secondary school through coursework, examinations, projects, and oral
presentations. Upon completion of upper secondary education, students take
a state examination, the results of which determine placement in higher
education programmes.

- GRADING SCALE
- Students are assessed using a grading scale from one
to five; five is the highest grade and three, the lowest passing grade.

- VOCATIONAL/TECHNICAL
EDUCATION

- Professional,
specialized and technical education is offered in secondary level
institutions and institutions that bridge the secondary and postsecondary
levels of education.
-
- Students may complete
basic vocational qualifications in trade subjects after two-year programmes
upon completion of Grade IX. These programmes include a minimum of academic
subject material and focus on practical training in a particular trade.
Upon completion of basic vocational programmes in students receive a
Diploma.

- Specialized and
technical programmes are available to students who have completed Grade IX
or complete secondary education (Grade XI); the length of these programmes
varies depending on the level of education completed prior to entry into
the programme. Students who enter after Grade IX complete programmes of
four years in duration and include upper secondary academic subjects.
Students who enter programmes after completion of Grade XI complete
programmes averaging three years in duration, and only include subject
material in the specialist or technical field. Upon completion of
specialist or technical education, graduates receive a Diploma of Junior
Specialist and qualification in the field of study.

- PROGRAMME OF STUDY
- The curriculum for professional, specialized, and
technical education varies depending on the field of specialization
undertaken. Syllabi are generally not available, however, programmes
leading to professional, specialized, or technical qualifications are
regulated at the national level with little opportunity for elective study.
Academic records that include hours of study for each subject undertaken
can be requested from the educational institution.

examinations, required course projects, industrial/professional placement
schemes, and qualifying examinations.

The grade of “Pass” is awarded in cases where no final examination is
offered for a course, or when a course covering two or more semesters of
study is undertaken; upon completion of the course sequence an examination
is taken and a final grade is awarded.
