A general curriculum is implemented in the secondary stage throughout the country, covering Grades (or Forms) VI through XI. The curriculum consists of core studies in six subjects (religion, first language, English, science, mathematics, social studies) and two optional subjects selected from two areas: aesthetics education (art, music and dancing) and technical subjects (agriculture, commerce, etc.)

Students who have completed eleven years of schooling sit the GCE O-Level examination.  A candidate must pass in at least six subjects, including native language and mathematics, in order to pass this examination and have the possibility to enter upper secondary education.
