- Secondary education is four years in duration and culminates in a
national examination leading the award of the Secondary School Leaving
Certificate. The language
of instruction is generally Somali, however, some institutions have
offered instruction in English and/or Italian.

- The secondary curriculum as it existed at the time of the current
civil crisis included the seven subjects listed below. No information

- Assessment
and Promotion:
- Students are continuously assessed through coursework and verbal and
written examination. At the
end of secondary school, students take a national examination set by the
National Examinations Board. Upon
successful completion of the examination students receive the Secondary
School Leaving Certificate (Shahaadada Dugsiga Sare), which is the
general university admission requirement.

Vocational
Secondary Education
- Structure
- At the time of the current civil crisis
there were twelve technical/vocational secondary schools where subjects
such as building, electrical/mechanical engineering, auto mechanics,
commerce, marine and fisheries studies, telecommunications and
agriculture could be studied. The
medium of instruction at these schools was English even though English
was not studied at primary school.
