Professional,
Specialized, and Technical Education
- Professional Education
- Traditionally, students were admitted into
these programmes upon completion of the incomplete cycle (nine years)
however, students may enter upon receipt of the Certificate of Completed
Secondary Education, and complete a shorter programme of study. While
academic subjects are taught in these types of schools, the emphasis of
the curriculum is on vocational subjects, designed to train middle-level
personnel. Study lasts one year for holders of the Certificate of
Completed Secondary Education, and three years for those admitted with the
Certificate of Incomplete Secondary Education. A certificate of completion
of study, indicating the skill acquired is awarded by an examination
commission. Students who
obtain the diploma “with honors” can apply for direct admission into
tertiary-level institutions. Most graduates however, must join the
workforce for a minimum of one-and-one-half years before they are eligible
to continue their education.
-
- Specialized and Technical Education
- Higher level technical/professional training
(allied health, technology, teacher education) is provided by teckhnikumi
and uchilishcha. Admission is based on a competitive entrance examination.
Students who are admitted after the incomplete secondary education cycle
(9 years) complete a three- to four-year programme that incorporates the
completion of general secondary education and adequate training in the
chosen area of specialization. Those admitted with the Certificate of
Completed Secondary Education complete a two-year programme and only study
subjects in the area of specialization. Upon completion of the programme,
regardless of the point of entry, a diploma with a qualification is
awarded by the State Qualifying Commission. Graduates may continue their
study in the area of specialization at tertiary-level institutions.
