Assessment and Promotion:
Students are continuously assessed through coursework and written and oral examinations in all subjects.  For some subjects students are given written assessments during the term and at the end of the term.  Students in the last two years of study are subject to testing set by the school inspectorates.  At the end of upper secondary education, students sit for the final examination (baccalaureat) which covers the following subjects: Romanian language and literature, mother language and literature (for students of national minorities), mathematics, or a humanities subject, Romanian history, and one or two optional subjects.  If they pass the examination, and a practical test involving the writing of a paper concerning a specific subject, they will also obtain a certificate granting access to a job.  The Diplomă de Baccalaureat which is the general admission requirement for higher education is awarded upon successful completion of the examination.

VOCATIONAL/TECHNICAL SECONDARY EDUCATION

Age of Admission:
Age 12

Length:
Two to four years

Programme Studies:
Technical secondary schools offer day and evening classes. They are independent or integrated in groups of schools. In addition to a vocational training school, a combined group of schools can include an apprenticeship school and a sectoral upper secondary school.  Post-secondary vocational training is also offered.

The duration of vocational education is two to four years, depending on the sector of training.  Vocational schools offer qualification and re-qualification courses, on a contractual basis, at the request of companies and public or private institutions.

Apprenticeship schools function in the framework of vocational schools; part of the training is carried out in companies.  The entrance examination for these schools consists of specific skills tests. The duration of the course is one to three years.

Assessment and Promotion:
Students are continuously assessed throughout the year via coursework and written and oral examinations.  The examinations are sometimes organized at the national level through vocational competitions.  Vocational and apprenticeship studies conclude with a final examination.  Successful students receive a Diplomă de Absolvire a Şcolii Complimentare său de Ucenici (Diploma from Complimentary r Apprentices’ Schools) or Diplomă de Absolvire a Şcolii Profesionale (Diploma of Graduation from a Professional School) and a Certificat de Calificare (Certificate of Training) or qualification granting access to a job. Pupils qualifying from vocational schools and holding a leaving certificate can apply for the entrance examination to upper secondary schools.
