ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

Age 6 or 7.
 
Length: 
Four years.
 
Programme of Study:
Primary education is provided in three types of schools: Grade I-IV schools; Grade I-VIII schools (gimnaziu, covering primary and lower secondary education); and Grade I-XII (or XIII) schools (liceu, covering primary and full secondary education).

Assessment and Promotion:
There is no examination at the end of Grade IV, though students are continuously assessed through coursework and written and oral examinations. A teacher can compel a student to repeat a class, if the marks obtained are not satisfactory.
