- HIGHER
EDUCATION
- General
Information:
- The
Commission on Higher Education (CHED) is responsible for the operation
of all higher education institutions, both public and private.
The commission regulates course offerings, curricular
development, building specifications, and tuition fees.
-
- Structure:
- Higher
education is offered at colleges and universities; both private and
public. Almost all Philippine institutions operate on a semester system.
The few institutions which operate on a trimester system, offer all
classes in semester units, not quarter units. There are no institutions
in the Philippines which operate on the quarter system.
-
- Admission
Requirements:
- The
primary admission requirement for entry to higher education in the
Philippines is a high school diploma. Most colleges and universities
have their own entrance examinations which students must complete in
order to be admitted.
-
- Programme
of Study:
- Most
Philippine degree programmes require completion of 135-160 semester units to
graduate, although some four-year programmes require as few as 120 or as
many as 200 units.
-
- At the
undergraduate level, two degrees are awarded: two-year associate degrees
and four- to five-year bachelor’s degrees.
Upon successful completion of a bachelor’s degree programme,
students may be eligible to continue their studies at the master’s or
doctoral level. Master’s programmes are generally two- to three-years in
duration and doctoral degrees a further three- to four-years.
