LOWER SECONDARY EDUCATION
Secondary Education Outline
Secondary education includes the middle stage, grades 6 to 8 and the lower secondary stage, grades 9 and 10. The language of instruction at the middle stage and lower secondary stage is Urdu or the regional language. The curriculum for the middle stage includes the compulsory subjects of Urdu, English, mathematics, sciences, social studies, and Islamic studies. The curriculum for lower secondary schools is prescribed by the Boards of Secondary and Intermediate Education.  Students who wish to apply for a scholarship take the Grade 8 Examination conducted by the respective Provincial Education Departments. 
 
At the lower secondary stage students begin to choose a science stream or general stream of study. Upon conclusion of grade 10 students take the Secondary School Certificate Examination, which is conducted by one the six Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education. The Secondary School Certificate is awarded upon completion of the examinations.

ASSESSMENT AND PROMOTION
Students are continuously assessed through coursework and examinations on an annual and semester basis.
