- The autonomous region of Kosovo in the
Federal Republic of Yugoslavia does not function as an independent
nation. The process for introducing a regional parliament is in the
planning phase and the region has been under the de facto control of the
United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) since
1999. Government agencies of all types are the under nominal control of
governmental authorities in Belgrade.
- Separate statistics cannot be provided
regarding the population of the region, number of functioning
educational institutions, academic staff, etc., other than those
provided for the Republic as a whole.
- A majority of the population is classified
as refugee and it is estimated that more than 60% of all academic
facilities have been destroyed.

- The population of Kosovo is ethnically
diverse: instruction in schools is given in Serbian, Albanian, Bosnian,
and Turkish depending on the local population. Kosovo does not have an
educational system that is distinct from the rest of the Federal
Republic of Yugoslavia.

Note:
The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia is not recognized in Canada. The
federation is made up two former republics of Yugoslavia – Serbia and
Montenegro, and two nominally autonomous and ethnically diverse regions,
Vojvodina and Kosovo.
