UPPER SECONDARY EDUCATION

Upper secondary education is also known as high school.  The programme is three years in length and has two streams: academic and vocational.  Upper secondary education is not compulsory and tuition fees are charged.
Academic senior high schools are referred to officially as general senior high schools.  In order to attend, students must complete an entrance examination set nationally.  Some more prestigious institutions may require an additional examination or have a higher threshold of required scores for admission.  Students carry a heavy study load while in school, which culminates in difficult university entrance examinations.  Students who successfully complete the general senior  programme are awarded the Immumgye Kodung Hakkyo Choeupchang (Academic High School Certificate). Those who wish to apply for university admission must sit for the Academic Aptitude Test.

In addition to general senior high schools, there are Special Purpose Senior High Schools in arts, foreign languages, science, or physical education. These schools are intended for gifted students whose academic results generally fall within the top 3% nationally.

In order to attend a Vocational Senior High School, students must complete an entrance examination.  Students who are successful in the examination may decide which school they would like to attend, based on their results.  There are four types of vocational secondary programmes: agricultural, technical, commercial, and fishery. A compulsory practical training component of six months duration is part of each vocational programme offered.  Students who successfully complete vocational secondary school are awarded the Silopgye Kodung Hakkyo Choeupchung (Vocational Senior High School Certificate).

PROGRAMME OF STUDY
The following table shows the compulsory subjects which must be taken by each secondary student.  At the end of grade 10 (the first year of senior high school), students choose to concentrate on either humanities or natural sciences, although all students must complete some mathematics and science subjects.  As the curriculum has been reformed several times in the last decade, it is not possible to provide the number of hours of study for each subject. However, in order to receive the Academic Senior Secondary Certificate each student must complete 240 units of study (approximately 80 units per year). A careful review of the students’ secondary school transcript will provide the information necessary to make a placement decision.

GRADING SCALE
There is no standardized grading system in use at secondary schools.  Schools may use an “A” through “E” scale with a grade of  “D” being the lowest passing grade and “E” representing failure. In addition the following numerical scale may be used:
