LOWER SECONDARY EDUCATION

Lower secondary education or middle or junior high school is compulsory and partially free. Only those students in rural areas and students specified under the Special Education Promotion Act can receive the full benefit of a free education.  There is no entrance examination; students are allocated to schools within their residential district by lottery.

ASSESSMENT AND PROMOTION
Students are continuously assessed through practice examinations, coursework, and projects. Grade progression through middle school is automatic. Upon completion of middle school studies students are awarded the Chung Hakkyo Chorupchung (Lower Secondary School Diploma). 
 
GRADING SCALE
There is no standardized grading system in use at secondary schools.  Schools may use an “A” through “E” scale with a grade of  “D” being the lowest passing grade and “E” representing failure. In addition the following numerical scale may be used:

It should be noted that students are rarely failed in Korean secondary schools as this would prevent them from passing to the next grade.
