HIGHER EDUCATION

Admission requirements:
The completion of upper secondary school, marked by the attainment of the Kotogakko Sotsugyo Shosho (Upper Secondary School Certificate of Graduation) is the main requirement for entrance to the tertiary level. In addition, students must take the national university entrance examination, known as the Examination of the National Centre for University Entrance Examination. Private universities usually have their own entrance examination that is required for admission to those institutions.

Length:
At the university level, the first degree, known as Gakushi (Bachelor), generally required four years of study. Programs in medicine, dentistry and veterinary science require six years of study.

The Shushi (Master's) degree is granted after two additional years of study beyond the bachelor level after the completion of thirty credit hours and a thesis. The Hakushi (Doctorate) degree requires completion of a minimum of three years of study beyond the Master's level and a total of fifty credit hours. Each Doctorate candidate must also complete a major research project, submit a dissertation and pass a final examination. Customarily, scholars must also prove themselves in research and publication before actually receiving the degree.

Junior colleges provide two to three year courses, which do not lead to a degree, but credits may be counted towards degree requirements at universities. Technical colleges offer five-year course, with the first three years at the upper secondary and the last two years at the post-secondary levels.

Assessment and Promotion:
Students are assessed based on written examinations, in combination with research projects or essays.
