ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
Elementary education is administered by local and municipal authorities in India. Children begin elementary education at approximately age six, in a cycle lasting seven to eight years. Standards I – V are known as lower elementary and VI-VIII as upper-elementary.  The language of instruction is the regional language of the State.

PROGRAMME OF STUDY
No information regarding hours of study can be provided for this level of education; the following courses make up the elementary school curriculum:
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Arithmetic
  • History
  • Geography
  • General Science
  • Civics
  • Foreign Language  (English and/or Hindi introduced at Standard VI)
ASSESSMENT AND PROMOTION
Examinations are set by the school or by Municipal Boards and are usually held at the end of each term and each school year.
 
GRADING SCALE
Information regarding grading at the elementary level in India is not available at this time.
