HIGHER EDUCATION

Higher education is provided by universities, polytechnics, colleges and technical institutes in Hong Kong.

Admission requirements:
Admission to the first level of university studies is mainly based on the student's HKALE results. Many universities will look at the general exam results, but will attribute a greater weight to particular subjects depending on the program requirements.

Non-university tertiary institutions require the completion of the HKCEE with acceptable results.

Length:
The Bachelor degree is generally three years in length, although specialized programs may take up to six years.  The next level is the Master's degree, which is conferred after one to two years of study.  The third level is the Doctorate degree, which takes between two to seven years.

Students are assessed through coursework and written and oral examinations held at the end of each semester in order to be accepted into the following year of study.  The Doctorate degree (PhD) requires a period of research, the submission of a dissertation and defence.
