HIGHER EDUCATION
After obtaining the diplôme du baccalauréat, students attend either a university or a Grande École.

Admission Requirements:
Generally, universities require the student to have successfully completed the upper secondary level and to have received diplôme du baccalauréat for admission. Students wishing to pursue studies in the medical, dental or pharmaceutical fields will have to fulfil additional entrance requirements

Grandes Écoles recruit students through highly competitive entrance examinations. Frequently, students have already completed one or two years of university, although this is not a requirement for enrolment.

Length:
The first cycle of university study results in a diplôme d'études universitaires générales (DEUG). Students who continue beyond the first cycle to the second cycle of university study acquire the licence after one year or the maîtrise after two years.

The ingeneur (engineer) program at the Grande École is three years in duration.

The third cycle leads to the diplôme d'études supérieures spécialisées (DESS) and the diplôme d'études approfondies (DEA), and eventually leads to the Doctorate, followed by the doctorat d'État (state doctorate), which takes a much longer time to attain. It is important to note that the doctorat d'État qualification was officially annuled in 1984 and has since only been awarded to students who began their dissertation before that date.

Assessment and Promotion:
The educational programme in the first cycle is based on a system of "units". Each unit corresponds to a specified number of courses, directed assignments and practical work throughout the academic year. Grading for each unit is based on continuous assessment by the professor, as well as by the final exam.
