LOWER SECONDARY EDUCATION (EDUCACION MEDIA)

Structure
Secondary education is organized into two stages:

  • Ciclo básico (basic cycle) or  educación media básica (lower-secondary education)
  • Ciclo vocacional or educación media vocacional(vocational cycle).

It should be noted that the term "vocational", as used by Colombian authorities, refers to all types of specializations; including purely academic programmes. The basic cycle spans grades 6-9 and is compulsory. The vocational cycle is two years in length and leads to the title of Bachiller (Bachelor).

Age of Admission

Length
Four years, grade 6-9.

Programme of Study
In the first two years of the basic cycle of secondary education, students follow the same academic curriculum as used in elementary education. During the last two years of the programme, grades 8 and 9, additional vocational studies and a foreign language are included in the basic academic curriculum. The objective of vocational studies is to allow students to spend some time, five hours per week, exploring their vocational field of interest (e.g. academic, agricultural, commercial, industrial, and social studies education).

Assessment and Promotion
There are four tests given during the school year with values of 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%, respectively.  Those who fail a subject are required to take a make-up exam. Failure of more than three subjects, results in the mandatory repetition of the grade level. Students must obtain a minimum grade of 6 in all subjects in order to be promoted to the next level. Students who fail one subject may still be promoted if their grade point average is 7 or above.  Students may take make-up exams in two courses. However, if the student does not pass the examination they must repeat the grade.

Degrees and Certificates
There are no degrees or certificates awarded upon completion of this stage.
