SECONDARY EDUCATION (SEGUNDO GRAU)

The requirement for entering intermediate school is to have completed elementary (fundamental) school, or the equivalent supplementary schooling.

AGE OF ADMISSION
15 years.

LENGTH
Segundo grau (secondary level) requires 2,200 hours of effective schoolwork, spread over a period of three school years. When professional training is included, schooling may last for four to five years, depending on the nature of the program and the minimum requirements established by the Federal Educational Council for each district.

Secondary education is provided both day and night and the institutions are organized as such. Approximately 60% of students enrolled in upper secondary education are enrolled in night school due to the fact that a vast majority of them work full time.

VOCATIONAL/TECHNICAL EDUCATION

The Brazilian Government has chosen to separate technical education from secondary schools, leaving this area at a post-secondary level, outside of the formal encino médio.

Students who complete basic vocational training (1,050 hours of special training courses) at the secondary level rather than specialised technical training receive a Certificado de Habilitaçáo Básico (Certificate of Basic Training). The certificate enables students to take a university entrance examination, enter the job market or undergo further technical training leading to a Diploma de Técnico de Nivel Medio (Diploma of Intermediate Level Technician) or a Diploma de Técnico de 2º Grau (Diploma of Technician of the Second Level).

Students who complete 300 hours of special training courses receive the Certificado de Auxiliar Técnico (Certificate of Technical Assistant).

Both the Diploma de Técnico de Nivel Medio and the Diploma de Técnico de 2º Grau require 2,200 to 2,900 hours of study, including 900 to 1,200 hours of special training courses and intensive on-the-job training in a specialized field.

Assessment and Promotion:
Student assessment is based on special projects and class work, as well as periodic and final examinations. A student who does not successfully complete a subject will receive a dependência (deficiency) in that particular course. The number of dependências that a student may receive without repeating the entire year varies by school, with the most common standard being a maximum of two subjects per year.

The following are potential certificates and diplomas that are awarded:

  • Certificado de Conclusâo de 2º Grau (Certificate of Conclusion of 2nd Level)
  • Certificado de Habilitaçáo Básico (Certificate of Basic Training)
  • Diploma de Técnico de Nivel Medio (Diploma of Intermediate Level Technician)
  • Diploma de Técnico de 2º Grau (Diploma of Technician of the Second Level).
  • Certificado de Auxiliar Técnico (Certificate of Technical Assistant)
