HIGHER EDUCATION

There are nine publicly supported universities, including a University of Engineering and Technology and an Agricultural University in Bangladesh. Universities are both teaching and affiliating institutions with departments of studies and related institutes, constituent colleges, and affiliating degree colleges.  The constituent colleges are part of the university but may be located off the main campus.  They are run as separate institutions, but they fall under the financial, administrative, and academic control of the university.  Universities and their constituent colleges usually offer courses leading to honours degrees and postgraduate awards.

Affiliated degree colleges are run by the government or private religious or philanthropic organizations. They are affiliated to a university.  The university is only concerned with the maintenance of standards through the prescription of syllabi and the organization of common examinations.  The university is responsible for the awarding of degrees.  It is the role of the affiliated degree colleges to prepare students to take the university examinations.  Affiliated degree colleges usually provide courses leading to “Pass” or ordinary degrees and they may also offer courses leading to the Higher Secondary Certificate.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The admission requirement for university degree programmes is the Higher Secondary School Certificate.

LENGTH
Two years for ordinary or pass bachelor’s degrees, three years for honours degrees in the arts and sciences, and four years for bachelor’s degrees in engineering fields and some agriculture fields.

Postgraduate diplomas require one year of study beyond a bachelor’s degree and master’s degrees require two years of study after a pass or ordinary bachelor’s degree or one year after an honours bachelor’s degree.

Doctoral study is normally based on a master’s degree for admission and can be completed in a minimum of two years study beyond the award of the master’s degree.

ASSESSMENT AND PROMOTION
Students are continuously assessed through internal coursework and examinations and annual or semester external examinations.
