SECONDARY EDUCATION
General Information
The secondary education (referred to as "middle school" in Albania) system consists of grades 9 through 12, which are taught in the shkollë mesme (middle school). Admission to middle school requires a Dëftesë Lirimi (Leaving Certificate) from a shkollë 8-vjeçare (eight-year school). Approximately 50% of students attend a shkollë e mesme e përgjithshme (general middle school), which offers four-year general education programs in the humanities and sciences and qualifies students for further education at post-secondary schools and universities.

Assessment and Promotion
Students are continuously assessed through coursework, as well as both written and oral examinations. Promotion from year to year is based on the success of the student in their schoolwork and examinations. Students who fail one or two subjects are assigned remedial course work to be completed over the summer; if the course work is passed to satisfaction they are promoted at the beginning of the next year. Students who do not pass the summer work or who fail more than two subjects must repeat the year. Upon completion of general secondary education students receive a Dëftesë Pjekurie (Certificate of Maturity).

Only students who receive a Certificate of Maturity are eligible to attend higher education institutions.

Vocational/Technical Education
Upon completion of middle school, many students choose to attend one of several types of shkollë professional (professional school), which offer programs in agriculture, business, fine arts, allied health fields, sports, and teacher training. Shkollë professional programs can be of three, four or five years in duration and prepare students for entry into the workforce and further education.

Four-year professional schools prepare students in arts (music, fine arts, ballet), sports, foreign languages, and teacher training. In order to attend these institutions students must complete competitive entrance examinations.
