HIGHER EDUCATION
General Information
Higher education is offered at institutions designated as universitet (university), institute i lartė (higher institute), or akademi (academy). Universities are autonomous institutions, which are run by both managing and professional bodies. At the present time, there are eight universities, one higher institute and one academy of defence.

Admission Requirements
A Certificate of Maturity is required for admission to all programs. In addition, many higher education institutions require admissions examinations for particular fields.

Higher education institutions offer both basic and postgraduate studies. Basic studies last two years, while degree programs, leading to a Diplomė (Diploma) last four to five years. Postgraduate studies are of two types: one- to three-year programs leading to a Dėshmi Specializimi (Specialization Certificate) and three-year research-based programs leading to the degree of Kandidat i Shkencave (Candidate of Sciences).

The Doktor mi Shkencave (Doctor of Sciences) is the highest academic degree awarded and is based on a significant period of research.
