Assessment and Promotion
Promotion from year to year is based on grades received in coursework and examinations throughout the year. In grades 1 through 4, students are required to pass courses in mathematics and language in order to be promoted to the next year; if they do not pass, remedial study must be undertaken during the summer months. If summer study is not completed to satisfaction, the school year must be repeated. In grades 5 through 8 students who fail in more than two subjects are required to repeat the year. If they fail in one or two subjects, remedial coursework must be completed over the summer. If the summer study is not completed to satisfaction, the school year must be repeated.

Upon completion of grade 8, the Provime Lirimi (Leaving Examination) is required. All students are tested in language, literature and mathematics. Those who pass the examination receive the Dëfesë Lirimi (Certificate of Leaving), which is required to continue studies in middle school. If the examinations are failed, students may retake the examinations.
